Ralph knew how to work with us and give us everything we wanted, and more than we expected.

Ralph R Mackin, Jr, AIA

Ralph spent his life growing up in the New York and New England rural area. Throughout those years, Ralph gained an appreciation of the regional historic styles; architectural styles such as the Victorian and its sub-styles Shingle; Stick and Queen Anne; other classics such as Tudor, Cotswold; Bungalow, Arts and Crafts; Georgian, Colonial Farmhouses; Capes, as well as unique Lake Cottages and Adirondack Camps. All these styles make up the vernacular that creates the feel of the region.

From this appreciation, Ralph developed his love of architecture. “These homes are all beautiful, but many times they don't have floor plans that live the way we do today,” admits Mr. Mackin. In this challenge, he developed his own style of interpreting classic styles, including features that were not part of the lifestyle 100 years ago, such as three-car garages, large family rooms, kitchens, informal dinettes, larger bathrooms and the integration of electronics such as television and sound. Ralph has paid much attention to this dilemma and has successfully interpreted this throughout his career. “Creating light, bright enjoyable homes and living spaces, oriented to take advantage of the sun and views of the site, with a historic reference is an objective of mine,” adds Mr. Mackin.

Ralph R. Mackin Jr., AIA attended Catholic University of America where he majored in Architecture.  After graduation, he fulfilled an apprenticeship with local architects and even worked for a residential contractor to better understand the techniques of the trade. With the information Ralph obtained from master craftsmen in the industry, and along with his love of classic residential architecture, he created Ralph R. Mackin Jr. Architects, AIA in 1992, to pursue and practice his vision of residential architecture. With a successful practice came many excellent opportunities to showcase his talents, and the firm branched out into other similar structures, such as expansion of historic regional religious facilities, and country club facilities. Ralph believes the design of public rural buildings and residential architecture go hand in hand, as these facilities co-exist in the neighborhoods we all live in.

Ralph R Mackin Jr Architects, PLLC, AIA enjoy a flourishing practice based on these principles. The firm is located in North Salem, New York, and has completed projects across New England, Mid Atlantic States, and beyond. They have also been expanding their geographic working areas. “With the advent of technology, it has made it much easier to work, and location of the project is no longer as much of an issue,” states Mr. Mackin.
